(2) Bottom--Kathy Bates (left) stars as Annie Wilkes, an obsessive fan who rescues romance novelist Paul Sheldon, played by James Caan (right) and later holds him captive in Castle Rock Entertainment'Misery'. An accomplished theater actor who saw many of her best stage roles, such as Night Mother, Crimes of the Heart and Frankie and Johnny in the Clare de Lune, go to other actresses on the screen, KATHY BATES, born in 1948, won the Best Actress Academy Award for Misery. She has since earned acclaim in such films as Fried Green Tomatoes (1992), Primary Colors (1998) and About Schmidt (2002). His turn as the similarly ill-fated Sonny Corleone in Coppola's 1972 masterpiece, The Godfather , solidified his stardom and earned him an Academy Award nomination.

Some of Caan's other films include The Godfather, Part 2 (1974), Funny Lady (1975), Rollerball (1975), Thief (1981) and Honeymoon in Vegas (1992). In 2003, Caan starred on the NBC television series, Las Vegas (off the air in 2007). When LAUREN BACALL, born in 1924, graced the cover of Harper's Bazaar as a model in 1943, Mrs.

Howard Hawks was impressed with what would come to be known as "The Look" and she told her producer-director husband about the sultry beauty. From the time Bacall made her Hollywood debut in Hawks' To Have and Have Not (1944) with Humphrey Bogart, both film critics and moviegoers fell in love with the beauty with the throaty voice. Lauded as the most sensational newcomer of the year, Bacall found both fame and love, falling in love and marrying Bogie, with whom she would star in three more films. After his death in 1957, Bacall made Designing Women (1957) and The Gift of Love (1958), but virtually dropped out of sight until 1970, when she made a triumphant comeback in the stage production of Applause.

Bacall's later films include Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Shootist (1976) and The Fan (1981). The actress was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996), winning a Golden Globe in the same category. The previous year, she had received an Honorary Award from the French Academy of Cinema.
