Vintage cast-iron hand-mechanical apple grinder for a cider press mounted on a sturdy wood base. Iron is imprinted: Montgomery Ward & Co. Top funnel has large triangular broken piece missing. Crank wheel and mechanism, heavy cast iron with patina, are in good working order. Has been in our family for the last 50 years. Probably dates from late 19th century but not sure. It looks more primitive than similar models shown in the 1895 Montgomery Ward catalog.

The mechanism is used to grind the apples and the apple chunks would fall into a container sitting on the platform below. Then teh operator would use a round heavy press plate for the threaded vertical shaft to screw down, using a T Handle, to press the apples and the juice (cider) to come out.

There would have been a tray-like piece with 1 high sides The basket sat on this and catches this juice. This vintage farm implement is charming to view and crank!
